Stone Care Guide
Natural stones are living things, shaped by nature over thousands of years. Each stone has its own hardness and structure; apart from diamond, most are delicate — layered or compressed stones can break on impact. A few simple habits will keep your stone glowing for years.
Daily Care
- Hold your stone under lukewarm running water (not hot, not ice-cold) for about 5 minutes.
- Then gently dry it with a soft jewellery cloth.
- Apply perfume, creams and cosmetics before putting on your jewellery, not after.
- Take it off for sports, the sea, the pool and the shower.
What to Avoid
- Do not use soap or liquid detergent — it dulls the surface and takes away the shine.
- Keep it strictly away from bleach, acid and chlorine — they make the surface porous, and this damage is permanent.
- Do not use ultrasonic cleaners or steam machines on delicate stones.
Storage
- Store stones separately; stones rubbing against each other can scratch (due to differences in hardness).
- Protect them from direct sunlight and high heat — some stones can fade.
Stones That Need Special Care
Opal: Contains about 20% water in its structure. An opal that dries out can crack. Do not store it in boxes with moisture absorbers; soak it in a bowl of water from time to time. Never keep it in oil.
Selenite: Dissolves on contact with water. Keep selenite away from water and wipe it only with a dry, soft cloth.
Traditional Cleansing
If you wish, you can rest your stone by burying it in earth for a while — a cultural cleansing practice that does no harm to the stone's surface.
A well-cared-for stone stays with you for many years — its glow, and its story.
