Why gemstone care matters
Caring for a natural stone is the most direct way to preserve its beauty and its life, and it should be done at regular intervals. The degree of hardness varies from one stone to another. Except for very hard stones such as diamond, most stones are fragile and delicate. Layered and compressed stones can loosen and break; some stones like selenite can be harmed on contact with water. Polished surfaces and natural prismatic tops are easily scratched, worn and damaged. That is why the care and cleaning of natural stones should be done with the utmost care, and they should be stored carefully when not in use.
How to clean a natural stone
- Warm running water: Hold the stone under warm running water for five minutes. This method suits most gemstones. Running water helps to carry away dust and residue on the surface. Dry it immediately afterwards with a soft jewellery cloth. The water should never be too hot or too cold; a sudden change in temperature can damage the stone's structure.
- Resting: Another method is to bury the stone in clean, dry earth for a day and let it rest. Placing the stone in a flowerpot is a calm way to free it of the dust gathered during the day.
- Soft cloth: For daily care, wiping the stone with a soft, lint-free cloth after each wear is often enough.
What to avoid
- Soaps and liquid detergents: Avoid them, as they can dull the stone and, over time, extinguish the polish and shine of the surface.
- Harsh chemicals: Bleach, chlorine, acid and similar harsh cleaning products damage the stone. They can make the surface porous and cause permanent changes. They should never be used for cleaning.
- Heat and sudden temperature change: Direct sun, radiators and hot water can fade the colour of some stones or crack them.
- Impact and abrasion: Delicate stones must be protected from falls and knocks. Stored together, different stones can scratch one another.
- Cosmetics: Perfume, cream and hairspray can leave residue on the stone and its setting. Put jewellery on last and take it off first.
Storing correctly
Store jewellery you are not wearing in its own box or in a soft little pouch. Keeping each stone in a separate compartment prevents hard stones from scratching softer ones. A dry, cool place away from direct light is ideal.
Silver care
Silver settings can tarnish over time with the moisture in the air. This is natural and not permanent. Gently wiping with a soft silver-polishing cloth usually restores the shine. Do not use abrasive powders or a stiff brush, and avoid aggressive silver-cleaning liquids near the stone. Storing the piece in an airtight pouch when not worn slows tarnishing.
Special care for opal and delicate stones
An opal, well cared for, lasts a long time. Be careful to protect your opal from scratches and knocks. Stones should never be kept in oil or other chemicals; this can cause the opal to lose some or all of its fire. Opals contain some water (up to around 20%), so they should not be stored for long periods in a bank safe or in dehumidified places, because of the moisture absorbers many safes use. If an opal dries out too much it tends to crack; this phenomenon is called "cracking" and lowers the value of the stone. Keep your opal away from anything that could dry it out. To prevent drying, it can help to soak it in water for a few hours from time to time. The same care applies to other porous, soft-structured stones such as moonstone, turquoise and malachite.
